Brian, a Melburnian friend of mine, picked me up from the hotel, and we were on our way to somewhere honestly I had no clue where he was heading. He drove a few miles then ended up to a relaxed seaside neighborhood with its unique vibe called St Kilda. I think one of the most picturesque points of the Bay a short distance from the city. Which got superb sandy beaches, classy nightlife, nice pubs, fine dining, boutique cake shops, recreational park, and I guess the most fashionable suburbs of Melbourne with grand homes and friendly people.
This bayside suburb, a 20 minutes tram ride from Melbourne, is one of the main tourist destinations and is renowned for the relaxing retreat from the city. We walked along the beautiful and clean shore, took in the views of people kitesurfing, skating, and jogging in a relatively cold and windy day.
Things To Do in St. Kilda
Check Out Acland Street
There are many things to do and see at St. Kilda. Still, I was lucky enough to see Acland Street, one of the leading destinations for visitors to Melbourne and among the world’s top backpacker destinations because of the busy cafes and St Kilda’s proximity’s beaches.
Visit Luna Park
Luna Park is a historic amusement park located on the shore of Port Philip Bay in St Kilda. It is well known for the famous scenic railway roller coaster.
St Kilda Esplanade Market
The Esplanade is located right next to Luna Park, a world-renowned market for high-quality and authentic Australian products. Take the 15 minutes tram (#16 or #96) ride from the city to get there. Open every Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
Watch Sunset from St Kilda Pier
The view of Melbourne city skyline is spectacular from the pier, particularly during the sunset. I would highly recommend this spot for a photo opportunity.
Hike Along The St Kilda Beach
About 700 meters long sandy St Kilda beach stretches from Melbourne Port to St Kilda and further. It is an excellent walk following the pathway. There are plenty of cafes along the way, and the opportunity to see penguins around the pier.
How To Get There
From Melbourne city hop on a tram from Melbourne city center to St. Kilda with an approximate travel time of 20 minutes. Tram passes down Fitzroy Street, along Esplanade and terminates on Acland Street.
From the Airport to St. Kilda is super easy. Taking the Skybus is the cheapest, it cost $18 each way. Otherwise, there are plenty of Taxi at the airport or choose Uber ride service.
