In addition to the photo-friendly game drive and watching massive herds of African elephants in Amboseli National Park, Kenya don’t miss out Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest peak.
Day 1: Wednesday October 04, 2017
Lake Nakuru – Amoseli
After two days of incredible safari in Lake Nakuru National Park, we departed Nakuru for Amboseli National Park. It was about 7 hour drive via Nairobi. Nakuru to Amboseli was about 233 miles (377 km). The highway is decent, but the slow-moving international truck will slow you down.
Then the highway from Emali to Kimana was lovely, with no traffic, so we covered 54 miles (88 km) in less than an hour.
The last leg of the road between Kimana to Kimana gate of Amboseli National Park was only 18 miles (30 km) but took us about 40 minutes as the road was not the best by far, it was bumpy all the way, and the unpaved road was very dusty. It was 6:30 pm when we arrived at Kibo Safari Camp, located next to the park entrance called Kimana gate.
Day 2: Wednesday October 05, 2017
Full Day Game Drive in Amoseli National Park
Early in the morning, we got lucky to have a clear view of snow-covered Mount Kilimanjaro before clouds built up over the peak.
On our first day of Amboseli, we planned for an extensive game drive starting at 8:00 am. Keeping that in mind, we quickly finished our breakfast, packed our camera and gear while our driver picked up our packet lunch from the hotel, and in no time, we were ready for the big day.
Soon we entered the park through the Kimana gate. We started viewing plentiful wildlife, including everything from Wildebeest, impalas, and gazelle; we saw hyenas returning home after a long night of hunting, giraffes on the horizon, zebras heading towards grassland, and warthog kneeling for grazing due to their short neck.
Stunning Game Drive in the Park
While driving in the park, we saw the gigantic Mount Kilimanjaro peak covered with snow in the far distance. In fact, the mountain is in Tanzania. Also, the amazing scene of elephants making their long journey through the meadow to Lake Kioko in search of food and water was breathtaking.
Wildlife Activities in Lake Kioko
After driving a couple of miles on the dusty unpaved road through the savanna, we came to Lake Kioko, a popular gathering spot for the park’s wildlife inhabitants. We saw hippos disappearing into the water and other early bird and animals already having their piece of the pie in the lake.
Climb up to Noomotio Observation Point
Noomotio observation hill is the highest point in the park, from where we had a fantastic view of lake Amboseli, the savanna, and the surrounding landscape. Our guide stopped here, and we climbed to the top for our lunch.
Lake Amboseli
Amboseli has an unlimited underground water supply purified through thousands of feet of volcanic rock from Kilimanjaro’s ice cap, which funnels into two clear water springs in the park’s heart. As a result, Lake Amboseli is one of the best places to view the park’s bird population.
As our first day of safari at Amboseli ended, we almost gave up on spotting the lion, one of our favorite big five, but on our way back to the camp, our guide heard something on the two-way radio and suddenly turned around. In a few minutes, he pulled over on the roadside, and we were lucky to spot a lion and lioness engaging in a mating session.
After a long safari day, we relax by the pool with a few bottles of local beer and enjoy the sunset.
Day 3: Wednesday October 06, 2017
Half Day Safari in Amboseli National Park
Wake up early since we need to enter the park by 06:00 am to experience the early morning wildlife activities and the beautiful sunrise scene on the horizon. We planned to finish the game drive by 10 am, return to our camp, have our late breakfast, and then head back to Nairobi.
It’s a completely different early morning experience, all the wildlife already out of their hiding, busy having their food before the sunshine and heat pick up its intensity. Our time at Amboseli National Park was about to end soon. We saw quite a few animals that one could only see in Amboseli, one of Kenya’s most famous safari parks.
We finished our 2nd day of safari at 9:30, and right before exiting the park, we saw a sad scene of a wounded zebra being attacked by a hyena, but there was nothing we could do to help the wounded fellow.
Return to Nairobi Airport from Amboseli
We returned to our camp, had our breakfast, then quickly checked out and headed for our 3 and 1/2 hours road trip back to Nairobi International Airport. Although our flight to Dar es Salaam was at 6 pm, I was a little worried, but our driver could make it on time despite the heavy traffic.
Accommodation in Amboseli National Park
We stayed at the Amboseli Kibo Safari Camp adjacent to the park. It was overlooking the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro. A great place to relax and enjoy the delicious local food and drinks.
My room inside the tent was spacious, with a washroom, Shower, and toilet. It was clean and comfortable; the great place to sit back and relax was the porch in the front with a beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro.
